Isaac Fero's 1887 Diary June






Rainy. I and Ed went into Beaver Dams this morning. Mr. Moore taken sick this morning. James and Alida came up, Alida stayed here and he went up to see his father. I went up there at night, found him very sick, but a little easier just then. Wed 6/1

Ed went after the Dr. and James and then after Melvina Roloson, for Mr. Moore, but he died before Melvina got there. I and Benjamin and Gerome Hall laid him out. Rainy day. I took B. H.. and Jane Voorhees application for insurance in the Farmer’s Reliance.
Martin Moore died this morning. Thurs. 6/2

Ed finished plowing buckwheat ground here this forenoon. Afternoon took his mother home and plowed on his place. Wet and drisly. James and Alida called here at night.
I took 2 bushels of oats and barley out of the bin and put into the feed box, making 14 bushels of new grain since we thrashed. Fri 6/3

Ed finished plowing on his place today. I went up to Mr. Moore’s to see if they wanted team or anything for tomorrow. I and Alida went to the grange. The Moreland Band in Beaver Dams today. Sat 6/4

Mr. Moore buried today. Wm. Gray, J. Clark, H. Miller, Wm. Stevens, D. Rogers and myself were pall bearers. Warm but lowry day. Duane Anthony’s folks here. George and Minnie called aspell after the funeral. Sun 6/5

Lowry with a little rain. Ed went to work in his corn. I done chores and went up to Ben’s and Jane came down aspell. Mon 6/6

Ed went to work on his place. Burt Rockwell got a load of hay for Dr. Seaman. I loaded it. 15.25 lbs. Tues 6/7

I and Alida went to Corning. Ed and John Crosburg? Sheared the sheep. Very warm day. Alida Moore and Annie came here today. Aaron and Sady called at night. Wed 6’8

Ed finished cultivating corn. I done the chores then went down to Frank and James’ aspell. Mrs. Anthony came here at night. Thurs 6/9

Frank’s folks came up a spell. Robia stayed till night, then I took her home and attended Temperance lecture at Beaver Dams. Came home to find all asleep and the house locked.
Ed sowed most of his buckwheat to his place. Cold with chilly wind. Fri 6/10

I went to see George and Minnie. Found them at home but George went after lumber for his house. Ed finished buckwheat on his place. A fine day Sat 6/11

I and Ed went to Beaver Dams church to children’s exercises. Beautiful day. I and Alida went to Beaver Dams at night to see the children’s concert and young folks took part which was a credit to both and an honour to Beaver Dams. Sun 6/12

Home all day and done chores. Ed worked on the road at Beaver Dams. Mon 6/13

Ed commenced drawing manure on buckwheat ground. Arthur brought Alida up and got three bushels of buckwheat and Alida stayed till night- then I took her home. George lee got 4 bushels of potatoes. Tues 6/14

We worked on the road. Made out 4 days. Very warm and dry. Wed 6/15

Ed worked on the road with team and scraper. I and James went to Watkins to County Grange. Had a small turnout and appointed the next at Sharpsburg the fourth Tues. in Sept. next. Alida Moore home with me. Warm and dry. Thur 6/16


James and Alida started for Savoca and Avoca. Martin Moore came and got 12 bushels of buckwheat for seed. I went up there and took Aaron and Martin’s application for insurance in the Farmer’s Reliance. I went down to Melvins’ just night. A fine day. Ed drawed manure. Fri 6/17

I went to Painted Post with the wool. Had 81 lbs. $28.35 drove Kit to buggy. Ed drawed manure, I went to Grange at night. Ed got butter till dc? Sat 6/18

Home all day. A little rainy. Ben and Jane called aspell at night. Sun 6/19

I went and took George Chrisjohns application for insurance in the Farmer’s Reliance. Called at Monterey, took dinner at C. Sedans. Very warm day Ed drawed manure. Mon 6/20

Ed dragged in the forenoon. I dragged in the afternoon and he sowed the buckwheat. I got it not quite half dragged over. Clarry Beecher here tonight. Rainy night. Tues 6/21

Rainy We divided the oats and barley in the middle bin, put my part in the box. 9 bushel. Ed took about 15 bushels to mill at Beechers I rode along to Beaver Dams. Wed 6/22

I and Kit went to Corning to Forepaugh? Show. Drove Kit to buggy. Thurs 6/23

I went to Penn Yan to adjust the loss of James Lack? B.F. Janes and Frank Smith. Ed took me to train with Kit and met me at night the same. Fri 6/24

I drawed the brush in pile and burnt them in Orchard and trimmed the trees that were cut down. Ed worked in his corn. Sat 6/25

Ed and Allie went to Jameses. I and Alida went to Frank’s. and went over to see Charley. He went back to Corning on his bisycle tonight. Allie stayed to James. Sun 6/26

I went to Watkins to mill 2 bags of wheat and took one for Mr. Anthony. Isaac rode along down. I got home a little after 1 o”clock, Ed cultivated his corn. Mon 6/27

We drawed straw on the buckwheat and spread it. Afternoon I went to Frank and Jamses. Ed rolled the buckwheat. Very warm day. Tues 6/28

I trimmed some brush in the orchard, then went and got Evy McClusky for Alida. Ed cultivated potatoes. Wed 6/29

Frank’s folks called here on their way to Avoca. I got ready and went along. A very warm day. We called at Bath to see Mit? We got to Mit’s about 4 o”clock. Found them well and at work in the hay fields. I took Mit 2 forks and one shovel. Thurs 6/30
